Bernard gives extra in magical role

A SUPPORTING actor from Hertfordshire has mingled with the magical Harry Potter as well as the sinister Sweeney Todd.

Bernard Usher has appeared in four of the five blockbusting Harry Potter films, playing a ministry official in the latest of the sorcery series, The Order of the Phoenix.

He will also appear in the Tim Burton directed musical Sweeney Todd, starring actor Johnny Depp, which is due to be released in the new year.

Bernard, a member of the Barn Theatre, in Welwyn Garden City, said: “Everybody working on the Harry Potter series has been super to work with. The two lads, Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint, are great.”

Bernard, who has starred in more than 60 films and numerous TV productions since becoming an extra about seven years ago, said he spotted Watton-at-Stone actor Rupert Grint many years ago.

“I worked on a film called Thunderpants about five or six years ago, which he was in,” he said. “He was obviously a good deal younger and I remember saying to somebody on set, ‘That young man is very professional and very capable’.”

He has appeared in a host of top flicks including Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, starring one of his favourite actresses Renee Zellweger.

Another of Bernard’s favourite experiences was working on Sweeney Todd.

Bernard said: “Johnny Depp is such a nice guy. During rehearsal he was moving around near me. I looked at him as if to say, ‘What are you doing?’. He said, ‘I’m just making sure I don’t block your light’. There aren’t many actors who would worry about that.”
