Interview Rupert

Rupert has just started a turn in his career. For the first time, he has left his role as Ron to shoot another film, “ Driving Lessons.” But that won’t prevent him from returning soon to Hogwarts, as the start of filming for “Order of the Phoenix is now imminent.

One: Can you tell us a bit about Driving Lessons, the film you’ve just finished?

Rupert: The first thing I can tell you is that it is nothing like Harry Potter. The fans shouldn’t see that film and expect to see Ron, because they will be disappointed. In Driving Lessons, I play the role of a timid young man, completely stifled by his mother, much too protective in this regard. But his life will change the day he meets an older woman, a retired actress who is going to take him on an unforgettable journey. Moreover, this extraordinary woman is played by Julie Walters, non other than Molly Weasley in the Harry Potter films. So if the ambiance of filming was nothing like what I’ve known up to now, nevertheless I was a bit among family, as I replied to the one I have a habit of calling “my witch of a mother…” [laughs]

Is it correct that in this new film, we’ll have the chance to see you salsa dance?

I see news travels fast…Effectively, after having just escaped the dance scenes at the Yule Ball in Goblet of Fire, I had to accept those planned for the scenario of Driving Lessons. And I can tell you it wasn’t easy. It happens in a scene when I go to a club with my girlfriend, when she, rather warmly, invites me to dance. To film that scene, I took salsa lessons for about a month. At first, I was really bad, but in the end, I started to get it. I hope I’ll be believable on the screen.

Shall we go back for a bit to Harry Potter? Have you finally read The Half-Blood Prince?

No, not yet. I’m a little ashamed, but between filming Driving Lessons and promotion for Goblet of Fire, I still haven’t found the time necessary to dive in. Nevertheless, someone had the great idea to tell me that someone important dies and he also told me his name. I hate that. There’s nothing like it to spoil a book for me.

Are you prepared to start filming your fifth Harry Potter? Do you think you’ll make all of them?

I really hope so! In any case, I want to make the mos t possible, because I truly get a lot of pleasure from filming them. The more the years go by, the better we get to know the other actors, which makes things even nicer. We’re a bunch of friends who reunite each year for an extraordinary adventure, which is really cool. I’m aware how truly lucky I’ve been and I hope that it still lasts for a long time.

In the end, bringing Ron Weasley to life in the cinema has only brought you happiness?

Yes. The only small constraint is not being able to to walk down the street without being recognized. It probably seems idiotic, but I still haven’t gotten used to it. Nevertheless, since people really love my character, they’re generally nice to me which is rather cool. I hope then that the little quarrel between Ron and Harry in Goblet of Fire doesn’t change public opinion with regard to Ron, because me, I had nothing to do with it…[laughs]

On a whole other subject, were you spoiled this Christmas?

I have to admit this year Father Christmas was very generous with me. I’ve known more difficult years…

What is the worst present you’ve ever been given?

A 3,000 piece puzzle! It was supposed to be Queen Elizabeth, but it was a horror. I never finished it.

Under your calm and cool exterior, are you in fact a big sportsman consumed with competitiveness?

I wouldn’t go that far…[laughs]
Nevertheless, for about a year, I’ve been into golf. I love that sport and I’ve become completely addicted. I’m still not a very good player, but I’m not hopeless. I’d love to play a game with Tiger Woods. He is by far my favorite sportsman.

Actuality

Direct from Planet Harry Potter
Last September 4th, Rupert Grint celebrated the release of his new film “Driving Lessons” in grand style with a pre-premiere attended by many of his partners from the “Harry Potter” saga: Emma Watson, Bonnie Wright (alias Ginny Weasley), as well as James Phelps (one of the Weasley twins, who Rupert had a beer with before the screening). All responded to the call to support the young actor, who in the film plays a role different from pleasant Ron Weasley. Rupert here plays a timid and complex teenager who takes driving lessons along side an old actress. She will help free him from the influence of his domineering mother…If in the film Rupert is successful in learning to drive, you can’t really say the same in real life. In fact, the actor admits he recently failed his driving test in spite of 60 hours of lessons! “I think however, the next time will be the charm,” he declared with optimism.

That’s a Wrap
….Concerning the content of the film, one controversy has created much uproar on the internet since fans learned “The Order of the Phoenix” would not contain a s ingle scene of Quidditch, though it exists in JK Rowling’s book. It’s true that this decision to cut the sequence is all the more disappointing because for the first time, we would have seen Ron join the Gryffindor team. But the producers won’t change their mind. “If we filmed everything there is in the book, the film would be more than 7 hours. We therefore had to make some choices and concentrate on the essential.” Too bad…
6th Film
Even though the release of “The Order of the Phoenix” is still a long way off, the date for the release of “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” has already been officially announced by the producers of the film. The sixth adventures of the students of Hogwarts debuts the 21st of November 2008 in the United States. At the present time, the participation of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint has not yet been confirmed, but it appears more and more inconceivable that the young actors would be replaced by other comedians. As far as we know at this time, only Tom Felton, alias Draco Malfoy, has confirmed participation in the film…

Driving Lessons

Rupert Grint was recently absent from filming “The Order of the Phoenix” to take part in the promotion of “Driving Lessons,” filmed shortly after “The Goblet of Fire.” In this film, Rupert plays the role of Ben, a teen ager who takes driving lessons alongside an eccentric actress (played by Julie Walters, alias Mrs. Weasley in the “Harry Potter” saga), who will accompany him in his quest for identity and help free him from his parents.

It’s a chance for the young actor to show he can play characters other than Ron: “The main reason I agreed to do this film is that the role I play is very different from Ron,” explained Rupert. “Ben is a very introverted, shy teenager raised by a very religious mother and father who is very distant. The second reason I chose this film is that it had a lot of driving scenes. I really had the opportunity to learn to drive thanks to this film, which I really liked. I think i n the future, I will do more films in this vein, which is to say, without special effects, but with a solid story and a more adult tone.”

Another big first for the film: Rupert here exchanges his very first kiss with a girl in front of a camera! “I will admit, that scene was not easy to film. I was very nervous and we had to do a good 15 takes. Fortunately, the girl I filmed the scene with was very pretty and she helped me a bit…” Presenting in several festivals in the United States, “Driving Lessons” does not yet have a release date and we don’t know if it will appear one day on French screens…

Confidences
Rupert Grint
In “The Goblet of Fire,” Ron confronts some disillusions, he smiles less than usual. A change in humor that has not yet shaken Rupert Grint’s enthusiasm, always very motivated when it comes to interpreting his character…
“Filming the Yule Ball scene was truly murder…”

Awards
As last year, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint were awarded the Otto Awards for biggest cinema stars of 2005 by the German magazine Bravo. The honor really pleased the trio of actors because it is awarded by the public. In these photos, Dan, Ron (!), and Emma pose with their trophies on the set of 8 0Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.”
Revision
Filming for “Order of the Phoenix’ was interrupted for the whole month of June so the young actors could take their end of year exams in tranquility. In fact, save Rupert Grint who stopped his studies last year, Emma Watson, Daniel Radcliffe and the others always take classes with private teachers during filming. During that one month pause, our students were thus revising intensively to better prepare for their exams. Since then, filming has resumed and should continue until the beginning of next year…
