Stars to ‘revitalise’ ITV ratings

ITV has said it plans to use big-name stars such as Robbie Coltrane, Ant and Dec, Helen Mirren and Simon Cowell to “revitalise” its main channel, ITV1.

There was “an incredibly strong drama line-up for autumn”, a spokesman said, although the full schedule will not be released until the end of the month.

Doctor Who’s Billie Piper and fashion gurus Trinny and Susannah also feature.

Charles Allen is standing down as ITV chief executive following low ratings and a drop in advertising revenues.

But the network pointed to recently-introduced series such as celebrity skating show Dancing on Ice and Inspector Morse spin-off Lewis as evidence of success in the past year.

ITV is to confirm full details of its autumn highlights at the Edinburgh Television Festival, which takes place from 25 to 27 August.

A spokesman said they would include Rupert Grint – who plays Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter films – who has been signed up for an unspecified project.

Victoria Wood, Ray Winstone and Julie Walters will also appear in forthcoming dramas.

Castaway show I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here would return, along with Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, he said.

Mr Allen will make way on 1 October for John Cresswell, who is currently finance director and who will become the interim chief executive until a replacement is appointed.

Half-year pre-tax profits at the ITV company grew by 12% to £173m.

However, there was a 4% drop in total net advertising revenues overall and an 8% fall at ITV1.

And there have been relatively poor ratings for reality show Love Island, which has consistently failed to beat Channel 4′s series Big Brother this year.
